Illustrations
Illustrations will not be included in the final manuscript for publication under any circumstances.
Authors/scientific editors are asked to take special care as regards the relevance and quality of illustrations. They will be printed in black and white and will appear in colour in the digital version on OpenEdition Books. For economic reasons, colour printing is strictly limited and must be justified on scientific grounds. Documents are further to be numbered and referenced individually and consecutively depending on their nature (map, plan, photograph, genealogy, stemma, plate or diagram).
In order to comply with Directive (EU) 2019/882 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 17 April 2019 on accessibility requirements, which aims to ensure that all persons, regardless of their status, can access digital services and products effectively and without barriers, authors are requested to provide an alternative text of at least 140 characters for each figure (map, plan, photograph, genealogy, stemma, plate or diagram) an alternative text of at least 140 characters. This text must not be a repetition of the caption and/or title of the figure. However, if the image is described in the body of the text, there is no need for this text. It is sufficient to indicate this for each illustration. For graphs, the numerical data serves as alternative text.
Casa de Velázquez, a not-for-profit teaching and research institution, is concerned about compliance with intellectual property laws. Authors and scientific editors are therefore asked to furnish original permissions for reproduction of illustrations used in commercially-available works pursuant to the Intellectual Property Code, law no 95-4 of 3 January. To ensure compliance with this law, each document for reproduction must carry an original individual permission issued by the rights-holder (person or organisation). The caption should make due mention of its provenance and copyright.
It is up to the author/scientific editor to verify the legal status of reproductions of documents to be used to illustrate their research work. If the document is not in the public domain, he/she must secure the necessary permissions, licences or assignments from the author of the work or his/her assigns and pay any related royalties.
It is up to each author to secure, and if necessary pay for, illustrations and reproduction rights, excepting the cover illustration, for which Casa de Velázquez will pay a maximum fee of 300 €.
In the event of failure to follow these instructions, Casa de Velázquez reserves the right to refuse illustrations that might encounter objections.
> Download the application form for Permission for reproduction in cases where the holder of title in the work, or its author or assigns, do not have it.

Cover image
The image will be processed in two colours with a blue dominant and must therefore be legible in black and white.
The colour of the original image cannot be a selection criterion, unlike, for example, the colour gold for a book about gold.
The important part of the image must be located in the lower part of the vertical A4 format and not in the upper part, which will be blurred.
- Resolution: 300 dpi
- Format: Vertical A4
Provide the figure title in the following order:
Author, «Title» or Title (as appropriate), year, description of the medium (wood engraving, oil on canvas, etc.), dim. 000 x 000 mm/cm, place of conservation, inv. 000 (detail on cover).

Illustrations in the text
Authors are asked to work to the scale of the book according to the dimensions of the box in the collection concerned, as there is a risk that illustrations that are too large (plans, maps and graphs) will become illegible once laid out in the collection format.
BCV, CCV, SCV
- Small format: width 115 mm, height 189 mm
- Large format: width 145 mm, height 242 mm
ECV
- Single format: width 100 mm, height 175 mm
Graphs
- Please provide the numeric data.
- Use greyscales (minimum 10%, 20% variations) for paper format and colour for numeric format.
- Use the Minion Pro font policy for written information (names and/or captions).
- Avoid presenting information in pie chart form.
Maps and charts
- Should be created using Adobe Illustrator (.ai) software.
- Do not insert an outer frame or around internal captions: enlarging or reducing the illustration for layout purposes would result in different frame thicknesses.
- Do not insert a title in the illustration: this would duplicate the figure title.
- The scale of the graph should be indicated by insertion of a graded line segment (never in the form: 1/100 or 1/1000).
- Indicate North.
- Download Scale-North
- Use greyscales (minimum 10 %; maximum 85-90 %) for paper format and colour for numeric format.
- Use the Minion Pro font policy for written information (names and/or captions).
- Line width: minimum 0.15 pt for solid or dotted lines and 0.25 pt for line and copy-dot work.
Items to be supplied
- One electronic file per illustration, identified by the editorial unit number (EU: chapter or article), followed by the author's name in the case of a collective work (CCV), then the genre and call number corresponding to that placed in the manuscript for all collections (BCV, CCV, ECV, SCV).
It is essential to avoid spaces, accents, and any type of special or substitute character (*, %, #, etc.) according to the following examples:

.../... - Permission to reproduce each illustration for paper and digital formats, numbered in the same way.
- A list of illustrations by author (CCV) or chapter (BCV, ECV, SCV), in a separate Word file comprising: the nature of each illustration (map, plan, photograph, genealogy, stemma, plate or diagram), its number (exactly matching the one in the document supplied), the title and the caption, as well as the source(s), credits and alternative text.
For the presentation of figure titles, captions must be complete (to the extent that data is available) and include the following information in the following order:
- the figure number (corresponding to the reference in the text)
- the artist's first and last name
- the title of the work (in italics)
- the date of execution (when known)
- the technique
- the dimensions in cm/mm (height before width)
- the location where it is kept
- then, on a separate line, the source and/or credit (with or without the copyright symbol) according to the information specified by the institutions concerned (or the copyright holder)
